Forest Closures Updated From Recent Fires

Effective immediately, the Deschutes National Forest has reduced the temporary emergency fire closure area on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District for the Bachelor Complex. A temporary emergency closure order remains in effect for areas around the Little Lava Fire and Lucky Butte Fire within the Bachelor Complex due to hazards associated with a recently burned landscape.

A burned landscape presents a number of safety hazards that either did not exist prior to the fire or have been exacerbated by the effects of the fire. Hazards may include fire weakened trees, landslides and rockfall, and hollow cavities below burned-out stumps.

People recreating in the area should consult the attached closure map before heading out to ensure they are in an open area. The Forest Service asks that people respect the closure areas for their own safety and the safety of our local search and rescue personnel and first responders.

The Edison Snow Shelter was burned in the Little Lava Fire. The Deschutes National Forest is currently coordinating with partners and working through the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process to design a new shelter.
